What is Folded Steel Samurai Sword？
Folded Steel Sword is more often known as Damascus Steel Sword due to its distinctive patterns of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. However, the method of producing genuine Damascus Steel is a forgotten art. Some metalsmiths attempted to duplicate Damascus steel, but none were entirely successful due to differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques.
Folded Steel Sword is a Japanese Samurai Sword, and the technique involves folding the steel repeatedly to remove impurities from the iron. The blade is folded several times, resulting in a grain texture (Hada) on the blade. Furthermore, folding needs to be done properly by an experienced Swordsmith to prevent failure between the layers and decrease the chance of creating weak spots.
Modern steel is already of high quality, but the folding process is said to boost toughness and resistance, as well as the beauty of the blade due to the folded steel pattern.
