Why Tanto's quantity dramatically dropped in WW2?

Traditional martial arts employed the use of tantō, primarily used as a stabbing implement but also has cut and slicing capabilities due to the sharp edges. The tantō can be single or double-edged, and its length ranges from 15 to 30 cm. The regular shaku length is about 30 cm, but during the time of the Northern and Southern Courts, the tantō were forged to be up to 40 cm long. It has been observed that the tachi is usually paired with a tantō, while the katana is usually paired with wakizashi.

A ban on sword forging after WW II led to a sharp decline in tantō production. Since the end of the war, there has been a demand for the tantō outside of Japan, starting in the 1960s and continuing to the present.

In a traditional Japanese wedding, Tanto is also given to the bride by her family since it is said to be a holy thing that will protect the wearer from bad forces.
